Humane

Last month, I joined Humane's discord server and it's really exciting to be a part of this community. I have been following this company for a year now and I think this is the next paradigm in human computer interaction.

Humane's mission is to build great technology that improves the human experience, is born of good intentions and that redefines human connection. This mission stems out of a simple yet an important question that we all should be asking— What’s gone wrong with our relationship with technology?

The interface that we have today i.e the smartphones, are isolating us from the real world. We are addicted to it and always looking down with our necks bent. And that's not a good thing. Humane wants to change this. It’s building a brand new interface that will open up a whole new world of opportunity for real human connection.

The big idea here is that the ultimate interface is no interface at all. This is known as ambient computing. Humane wants to create a future where the technology won’t come in our way instead will fade away in the background. When this happens we will all move back to humanity. This is the future I want to live in.

Another thing that excites me about Humane is the team behind it. It is founded by ex-Apple employees— Imran Chaudhry and Bethany Bongiorno. Imran is best known for his work on inventing the user interface and interactions on the original iPhone whereas Bethany was previously responsible for all software project management for iOS and macOS.

Moreover, based on certain sources, Humane has about 140 employees out of which about 60 of them are from Apple. These 60 employees, mainly engineers and designers, have spent a combined 420 years at Apple. This is important because during this time, Apple became a $2 trillion company and shipped some of the world changing products like the iPhone, iPad, Macbook, Apple watch etc.

Humane will be announcing its first product next year in 2023. I am really excited to see what they have to show. In 2007, Steve Jobs announced the iPhone and it single-handedly brought the mobile revolution. Now we are long due for another ground breaking, zero-to-one innovation and I believe Humane can give us that. It’s a rare intersection of ambitious and a noble mission coupled with a highly talented and capable team.

Will it succeed? I don’t know, yet. But it’s always inspiring when a group of people question the status quo and wants to build something that has the potential to impact billions of lives. It takes special people to build special products and eventually a special company. I truly believe Humane has the chance to be one of those.
